If you read nothing else
- 1The bottle aisle is mostly hype. Caffeine, vitamin-K and “peptide” eye creams have little direct evidence for clearing dark circles. Collagen/iron pills only make sense if there is a real deficiency or other reason.
- 2What fades brown pigment: eye-safe daily sunscreen, retinoid, azelaic/niacinamide support, and dermatologist-guided hydroquinone, tranexamic acid, or glycolic peels.
- 3A true shadow is structural. No cream fills a hollow. The best-evidenced anatomical fix is expert hyaluronic-acid tear-trough filler.
- 4Free stuff first. Run the two self-tests, do a 12-week home routine, then escalate only if the shadow or pigment persists.
Two 20-second tests tell you what to treat
Dark circles come in three flavours: brown pigment, blue/purple vessels, and skin-coloured shadow from a hollow. Most people are a mix.
Gently pull the skin sideways
Tug the under-eye skin outward with one finger and watch what the darkness does.
Move a lamp above vs in front
Compare flat light straight at your face with light from above or the side.
Likely mix from the photo: a soft tear-trough shadow plus a little vessel show, maybe faint pigment. Creams can nudge colour; the shadow itself is anatomy.
Marketing vs. what studies actually support
This category is full of tiny, brand-funded or subjective studies. Here is the gap between promise and practical evidence.
Every option, with an honest verdict
Colour-coded by evidence. Use the filters to cut to what is worth attention.
Cheap and safe first. Escalate only if needed.
One routine, one checkpoint, and one decision rule.
The daily routine
Targets everything creams can touch: colour, vessel-show, texture, puffiness. It will not erase a hollow.
☀️ Morning
- Mineral SPF 30–50 around eyes+ UV sunglasses.
- Vitamin C serum 10–15%Antioxidant + mild brightening.
- Optional caffeine gelFor temporary puff only.
🌙 Night
- Retinaldehyde 0.05–0.1%Start 2–3×/week, build.
- Niacinamide 4–5%Barrier + pigment support.
- Ceramide moisturiserKeeps retinoid tolerable.
🔁 Alongside
- Stop rubbing eyes & treat allergiesRubbing + congestion darken the area.
- Sleep head slightly raisedLess overnight fluid pooling.
- Check ferritin + B12Fix only if low.
Tolerance + early de-puff
Skin adjusts. Maybe less puff. Do not judge results yet.
First brightening
If there is pigment, this is when it starts to lift. Take same-light photos.
Reassess honestly
Re-run stretch + light tests. Colour improved? Maintain. Shadow unchanged? Expected; consider Phase 2.
The escalation rules
Only escalate if week 12 says home care hit its ceiling.
Consult for tear-trough HA filler with an expert oculoplastic surgeon or dermatologist. Highest-yield for the hollow, and reversible.
Add supervised hydroquinone or tranexamic acid, and/or glycolic peels.
Consider vascular laser or IPL for that layer.
Combine: filler for hollow + peels/laser for residual colour.
